Teaching English
This project does not require that a volunteer be certified in English or even be a teacher of any kind. We only require that you speak the English language well enough to be able to teach basic language skills. You don’t need to speak any of the local languages either. Your students will generally be between the ages of 6 and 12 and will have little to no knowledge of English. This project is available for all volunteers. Most people find that this volunteering opportunity helps them connect to the community Teachers and kids are always grateful to learn from native English speakers. A native English speaker can make a huge difference for someone who is learning to speak English, just because of simple things like infections or inflection or pronunciation of the language. Your time teaching these kids will be a life changing experience.
What to expect
Most schools or children’s centers don’t have much in their classroom. Sometimes you will be main resource as you teach. In some classes you will have a blackboard and a piece of chalk and that is it. Fortunately your life experience is a great resource to accomplish this. The students are usually curious and want to know about you. They want to know where you are from and why you came to volunteer in their area. Most schools follow a curriculum that is specific to the area you will be servicing. You will be working with the teacher who will provide a guideline about what you will be teaching. In some cases you will need to prepare your lesson and grade your student’s homework. You may be spending three to four hours a day in the classroom. You may also find it useful to prepare other extra-curricular activities like physical education, music lessons and drama.
Extra-curricular activities
You can participate in one of our teaching projects across a variety of subject areas. You might want to help teaching sports, music, art, drama, or another subject that you specialize in. Anything you feel you have a talent in and want to share with these children in an extracurricular activity can be fit into the program and we welcome your creativity and passion. These programs run alongside our teaching English. Some volunteers choose to combine teaching a language with teaching arts and crafts. Just ask and we will see if the school or the children center can accommodate your teaching style.
Hours
Your working hours will usually be decided on weekly basis. Most interns work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free.
